Turn a savings wish into a timeline

“I want to save more” is a good start, but a specific target makes it easier to see what the next step could be.

1. Name the goal and amount

Choose a target that is specific enough to estimate. If the cost can change, remember that your target may need updating.

2. Subtract what you have saved

The difference between your target and current savings is the amount still needed. If you have already reached the target, you can decide what comes next.

3. Choose a realistic monthly amount

Use a contribution that fits after essential expenses and other priorities. A smaller amount you can maintain may be more practical than an ambitious number you regularly have to skip.

4. Understand the estimate

Divide the remaining amount by the monthly contribution and round up to a whole month. This simple method does not include interest, investment returns, inflation or changing contributions.

5. Review the plan

Life changes. If your income or the target changes, update the estimate rather than treating the original timeline as a promise.
