How to plan when income changes every month
When earnings are unpredictable, a budget based on your best month can leave you short during a quieter one. A cautious plan gives you a clearer starting point.
1. Start with essential costs
List the costs that keep your household and work running: housing, food, utilities, travel, necessary supplies and repayments. Check the due dates too.
2. Estimate a lower-income month
Look at previous months and choose a realistic cautious estimate. It is not a prediction; it is a way to test whether your planned outgoings can handle a slower period.
3. Separate essentials from flexible plans
Some costs are hard to change quickly. Others may be adjusted or delayed. Do not cut essential food, safety, health or necessary work costs just to make a budget balance on paper.
4. Use stronger months thoughtfully
If a better month leaves extra money, you might use some to prepare for upcoming bills or build a buffer, depending on your circumstances. There is no single buffer amount that suits everyone.
5. Review when life changes
Update your estimates when work, family needs, bills or income change. A useful plan is one you can revisit, not one you have to get perfect on the first try.
